Øvre Pasvik National Park Visitor Centre: Discover the Unique Nature and History of Pasvik Valley

Established in 2001, the Øvre Pasvik National Park Visitor Centre is part of NIBIO, the Norwegian Institute for Bioeconomy Research. Located just 40 kilometers south of Kirkenes, the Centre offers an engaging and educational experience for visitors of all ages, focusing on the exceptional nature, culture, and history of the Pasvik Valley.

What You’ll Experience:

  • Interactive Exhibitions: Learn about the Pasvik Valley’s unique ecosystem, virgin forests, and its most iconic bird and animal species. The brown bear, a central figure in the region’s wildlife and the densest population in Norway, features prominently in the exhibitions, which include interactive elements for an engaging experience.
  • Cultural and Historical Insights: The exhibitions also explore the valley’s rich cultural and historical significance, situated on the borders of Finland to the west and Russia to the east.

Nature and Outdoor Activities:

  • Botanical Garden: Surrounding the Centre is a botanical garden, one of the few located north of the Arctic Circle. Visitors can explore its diverse plants and learn about Arctic vegetation.
  • Nature Trails: The nearby nature trails offer a chance to immerse yourself in the beauty of the Pasvik Valley, with educational posts along the way to enhance your experience.

The Centre is easily accessible, located just 40 kilometers south of Kirkenes. Direct flights with SAS and Norwegian connect Oslo Airport Gardermoen to Kirkenes in just two hours, making it a convenient destination for visitors.

Opening Hours (Summer Season):

  • Mid-June to Mid-August
    • Monday–Friday: 09:00–20:00
    • Saturday–Sunday: 10:00–18:00

Ticket Prices (2025):

  • Adults: NOK 120 per person
  • Groups (10+), seniors, and students: NOK 100 per person
  • Children under 16: Free
